Author of Journey out of Darkness
REDDING, Calif.- Jean Darby, Ph.D.,
has spent much of her life pursuing a singular
passion: education. Born in Pomona, Calif.,
in 1921, to two college professors, Darby earned
her bachelors degree from the University
of California at Chico, and her Ph.D. from City
University Los Angeles. She taught grades K-6
in the Enterprise Elementary School District
of Redding, Calif., for 30 years. A retired
teacher and prolific author, Darby uses her
gift for writing and teaching to help others
who can benefit from her knowledge, from children
in reading programs, to adults everywhere dealing
with difficult life issues.
One of Darbys greatest passions in life
has been teaching children to read. She authored
a set of books for a beginning-to-read program
that are still used in schools today, and she
was invited to New York City by the Ford Foundation
to speak about the program. Darby also wrote
a series of biographies on historical figures
for young adult readers, including Martin Luther
King, Jr., General Douglas MacArthur and Dwight
D. Eisenhower. Darbys knack for reading
instruction was put to the test when. During
the last seven years of her teaching career,
she taught reading skills to over 90 children
each day, with her sixth grade students testing
three years above their grade level in reading
tests.
Darby draws inspiration for her work from
the many facets of her life. Her popular childrens
book, Thats Me in Here, is based on a
pro-life standpoint and stems from her Christian
beliefs that every unborn life is precious.
She also penned a memoir, Dearly Beloved, I
Still Love You, which recounts the experience
of her late husband Raymonds battle with
Alzheimers disease. It is both a love
letter and a tool for other spouses dealing
with this debilitating disease.
With her new book, Journey out of Darkness
(Synergy Books, November 2006, ISBN 1-933538-41-4),
Darby expands her repertoire to adult fiction.
Based on her own experience fostering a young
girl who was raised by a satanic witch, Journey
out of Darkness traces a young girls struggle
to find Gods love amidst an abusive family
life. Darby wants to share her inspiring story
of overcoming the ultimate obstacle to empower
other victims of abusive situations-mental or
physical.
Darby resides in Redding, Calif., where she
is currently working on a follow-up to Journey
out of Darkness about the main character Ritas
adult life. A devout Christian, she is a member
of the American Association of University Women,
the National Federation of Republican Women,
and the Retired Teachers Association.
